US Biochar Coalition

Welcome to the US Biochar Coalition

Welcome to the US Biochar CoalitionWelcome to the US Biochar CoalitionWelcome to the US Biochar Coalition

Introduction

The U.S. Biochar Coalition industry trade association unifies the voice of biochar systems, agriculture, forestry, climate tech, and carbon removal industry stakeholders in advocacy for and development of market, policy, and economic conditions to catalyze biochar systems industry growth.

About Us

Biochar

Biochar is the solid material obtained from the thermochemical conversion of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment. In addition to biochar’s unparalleled agronomic, environmental, electrochemical, and structural benefits, it is a carbon dioxide removal (“CDR”) taskmaster. One ton of high temperature biochar placed into a durable sequestration permanently removes up to three tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, fixing the CO2 stored in biomass and taking it out of the carbon cycle for millennia.

Our Most Powerful Climate Tool

Integrating carbon negative bioenergy production with biochar CDR and biochar application to soils to support soil health, climate smart agriculture, and ecosystem conservation creates a pathway to:

  •  removing a combined 50 Gigatons of CO2 a year by 2050

  •  avoiding and displacing billions of tons CO2 from biomass waste recycling, fossil fuel displacement, nature based restoration

  • creating billions of dollars in economic impact and opportunity for rural communities.

Claiming Biochar System's Seat at the Table

The U.S. Biochar Coalition is galvanizing the collective power of businesses, investors, and civil society to influence and accelerate policy change, secure action for industry growth, and build the political infrastructure and collaborative industry relationships we’ll need to scale biochar systems across multiple markets.

With membership spanning the entire biochar systems ecosystem: producers, technology providers, developers, R&D, finance, carbon markets, climate tech, carbon removal, and diverse end markets; the Coalition is poised to raise the voice of biochar systems in a powerful way and dramatically transform the industry’s growth trajectory.

First Priority: Biochar Advocacy

Federal and state advocacy are crucial for growing the biochar industry because supportive policies can drive investment, increase market demand, and remove regulatory barriers. Effective advocacy helps raise awareness of biochar’s environmental and economic benefits, encourages funding for research and development, and ensures favorable regulations that enable industry expansion. By engaging policymakers at all levels, we can foster a sustainable, innovative biochar sector that delivers long-term environmental and community benefits.

Call To Action Starts Now

There is no more powerful climate solution available to us than  biochar systems. It is time that all key stakeholders and decision makers in the climate change, agriculture, biodiversity, finance, adaptation, and resiliency ecosystems recognize the value of this carbon triple threat and step up to rapidly deploy it. We have no time to lose. The call to action starts now.
